If you have taken Tongue-Tied Academy and feel you’d like more practical training before implementing this service in your clinic, this live course is for you.

The live patient course takes place in Dr. Baxter’s private practice in Birmingham, Alabama and offers participants a personalized, hands-on, and comprehensive learning experience that gives them the confidence to treat children of all ages with tongue- and lip-ties.

Please note: This is an advanced course, so laser basics and the basics of the tongue- and lip-ties will not be covered. If you need a refresher, you can review coordinating modules in Tongue-Tied Academy prior to the live learning experience

Here’s exactly what you can expect:

Observe a consult & release.

Because our patients are often traveling to our clinic from a distance, we usually start with a consultation and then diagnose, perform the release, and give aftercare instructions, all in the same day. This means participants will observe this process from start to finish for, multiple patients, during their time here. We aim to have at least seven new patients and five follow-up patients of a variety of ages.

Observe a follow-up visit.

Our live course participants will accompany us on our follow-up visits with patients. These appointments are an important part of our work—we listen to families experiences, hear about results of the release procedure, and address any issues or problems they have experienced.

Get hands-on experience.

We limit our live course to four participants per session so they are able to get hands-on experience in diagnosis and tie-release procedures. (We go as hands-on as we can for participants without a license in the state.) This course gives participants the unmatched experience of in-person clinic visits, with ample time for discussion and instruction.

Discuss as you learn.

Clinic days during the live course are scheduled carefully to include a full spectrum of our services. We schedule fewer patients on these days so there is plenty of time for participants to ask questions and become familiar with these procedures (often over world-famous guacamole at the restaurant next door!).

Know just how to help.

An important part of this work is educating the families of patients about the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for tongue-, lip-, and cheek-ties. We share exactly what resources we give to families at each step of the process.

Registration can be completed and paid for through this website. Keep scrolling for upcoming dates along with links for registering. Class size is limited to four students, so dates fill up quickly!

Where should I fly into?

The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) is located about thirty minutes from our office.

Where should I stay?

We have a negotiated rate at the Holiday Inn Express Oak Mountain, which is about a two-minute drive from our office (not walkable). Just ask for the Alabama Tongue-Tie Center rate when booking!

What's the easiest way to get around?

Our clinic is not on a route for convenient public transit, so renting a car is probably your best option. There are a variety of rental options at the airport. Uber and Lyft services are also available.

Birmingham is a beautiful city with a rich cultural heritage, known for its role in the civil rights movement and its abundant outdoor recreational activities. How long is the course?

The live course takes place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the clinic. On live course days, we schedule fewer patients than normal so there is plenty of time for instruction, discussion, and questions.

Will I receive CE credits?

You will! Dentists and hygienists earn 8 hours of ADA-approved CE credit for completing this course.

Does this course teach about treating adults?

Our clinic primarily treats babies and young children, so you will probably not see any adults during your course. We do have limited information about adults in our Tongue-Tied Academy online course, but we highly recommend you read about Dr. Zaghi's Breathe Course before taking this one. It may be a better fit for you.

Do you accept participants near your service area?

Since the majority of our patients come from 2 to 3 hours away, and we are teaching all of our methods and unique treatment strategies, we are not currently accepting registrations from professionals within a 3-hour driving radius of our office. (See Exclusion Map)

What if I need to cancel?

Please consider your date carefully before registering! We limit the class size to four, so it is difficult to reschedule.

If it is necessary to cancel, there is a $500 cancellation fee up to 30 days prior to the course start date. Orders placed by accident and orders placed by those who live within 3 hours of the office will be canceled, though we will retain $100 to cover credit card processing fees. Unfortunately, we are not able to issue refunds of your donation if canceled within 30 days of the start date.
